A temporary custody hearing is when a judge decides where your child will live while your case is
ongoing. It’s not a final custody decision, but it sets the tone for the rest of your case.
The judge listens to DCF, to you (through your lawyer), and reviews evidence. The goal is to decide
whether your child can safely remain with you, with another family member, or be placed in foster care
until the case continues.
Why does this matter? Even though temporary, these decisions can shape your case for months. If your
child is removed, it can be hard to get them back.
What should you do? – Don’t go it alone̶ DCF has lawyers, and so should you. – Gather documents,
school records, letters, or proof of stability. – Show the court you can meet your child’s needs.
