If you’ve found yourself here, it’s probably because you or someone close to you has been reported
to the Department of Children and Families (DCF) under something called a 51A report. This can feel
frightening and overwhelming, especially if you’ve never had contact with DCF before.
The good news is: you’re not alone, and there are clear steps you can take to protect yourself and your family.
A 51A report is a notice to DCF that someone thinks a child may be at risk of abuse or neglect. Certain
professionals̶ like teachers, doctors, therapists, and police officers are called “mandated
reporters.” By law, they must file a 51A report if they suspect a child is unsafe. But anyone, including
a neighbor or relative, can file one.
The report is just the starting point. It does not mean you’ve been proven guilty of anything.
After a 51A is filed, DCF screens it, investigates if needed, and decides whether the report is
“supported” or “unsupported.” If supported, it can impact custody, your record, and your work
with children. That’s why it’s so important to take it seriously.
What should you do? – Stay calm. – Know your rights. – Document everything. – Get legal help early.
